It is common that we come across these terms in our daily lives, but what do they mean? Electricity generation, transmission and distribution are part of the same rather complex power supply system. Let's explain each phase.

GENERATION PHASE

This phase is where the main process of energy distribution takes place. Here occurs the capture of primary energy that will be transformed into electrical energy. The generators are responsible for carrying out the conversion of diverse sources into energy. In Brazil, we have, for example, the hydroelectric plants which supply most of the electric energy demand in Brazil. In addition to hydroelectric plants, another type of renewable energy is on the rise: photovoltaic solar energy. In an exponential growth, solar plants are increasingly present in the national territory, making viable not only a clean source but also a cheap one.

TRANSMISSION PHASE

For electric power to reach consumers, it is redistributed from load centres, and through electric cables that form a transmission network it reaches consumer centres. When the energy leaves the generators, its voltage is extremely high, which is why the power towers need to be better equipped to withstand it. When it reaches the consumer centres, the voltage is already much lower.

DISTRIBUTION PHASE

After the voltage is reduced, the concessionaire is responsible for the distribution of energy through the lines, making sure that the electricity reaches each company or residence in an effective way. A voltage reduction is still made in the transformers that are installed in the street poles, staying at a voltage that does not offer risk to the population. The importance of knowing each step of how the electric power supply is done is that, besides demystifying some basic mistakes in everyday life, it also helps to avoid that you think you are paying for just one step. Understanding how things work helps to change our view of the world and expand our outlooks!
